Chickenshed is built on the notion of inclusive participation with the belief that everyone can contribute their ideas and gifts regardless of circumstance or background.
Chickenshed’s no-audition approach to creating original work using storytelling, song and movement is like nothing else in NYC. Our process focuses on each child’s individual creativity and strengths, and cultivates a “theatre family” of peers with different backgrounds, abilities, and talents. The kids work closely with professional Teaching Artists to collaborate and express their ideas, resulting in high-quality theatrical work. Our philosophy fosters inclusion, compassion and kindness, resulting in a vibrant and unforgettable experience.
Chickenshed Players 1 (ages 6-8)
Our young Players meet weekly during the school year and take part in fun, creative classes led by experienced Teaching Artists. All aspects of theatre are explored through play and interactive performance. The children help shape the narrative and we use their original ideas to devise stories through movement, music, and words.
Chickenshed Players 2 (ages 9-12)
Under the guidance of our experienced Teaching Artists we focus on the continued development of a range of performance techniques. All of the children involved are supported to enable them to grow and express their creativity. As they gain confidence and responsibility they begin to work more independently, developing a real sense of ownership over their performance work. The support our Players receive from their Teaching Artists encourages a greater understanding of Chickenshed’s inclusive creative process, nurturing their energy and enthusiasm and providing opportunities for members to genuinely contribute to the experience and the performances they partake in.
"I HAVE HAD MORE FUN IN TWO CLASSES THAN I'VE HAD IN YEARS"
