TEENS

Chickenshed Players 3 (ages 10-13)

Our no-audition approach to creating original work through storytelling, song and movement is like nothing else in NYC. The Chickenshed Players process focuses on empowering each participant to share their individual creativity and strengths, so that they cultivate and evolve a “theatre family” of peers who have different backgrounds, abilities, and talents.

Our theme for the Winter and Spring semester programs is “How to Make a Better World,”’ based on the book of the same name by Artistic Ambassador Keilly Swift. Through a range of theatrical projects that include storytelling, music, signing and movement, Players will embark upon the creation and development of a new musical. Supported, empowered and encouraged by the Teaching Artists, our Players are part of the inclusive creative process, nurturing their energy and enthusiasm into a real sense of ownership over their endeavors. Guest artists from time to time are invited to share their expertise and encourage questions and thoughts from the Players . Each term concludes with a performance, which may be online or in-person, as conditions allow. This program encourages Players to build and foster relationships with their peers, in turn strengthening a theatrical community that is so much part of the magic of Chickenshed!

Courage, magic, honesty, passion, emotion and truth. These are all the things that make our members, participants and performers so wonderfully unique. As well as having the opportunity to develop their performance skills and take part in main house productions, everyone who takes part gets to grow and thrive in an inclusive environment where being different is the one thing we all have in common.

Working closely with professional Teaching Artists, each Player immerses themselves in exciting activities that develop their range of performance skills. Players are encouraged and empowered to share their creativity and ideas as they collaborate to create and develop a new musical. From time to time, Guest Artists are invited to share their expertise, answer questions, and inspire the Players’ thinking and creativity. Each semester concludes with a performance, which may be online or in-person, as conditions allow.

As these most senior Players develop, they have the opportunity to exercise their mentoring skills with younger Players, in addition to their own group work. Guided by the artistic team, they will find themselves experiencing a wider range of activities and training. As Players gain confidence and experience they are encouraged to create and lead projects that may involve younger Players as well as their peers.

Youth Intern Program (16-18)

As Players are in their final years of high school they may have the opportunity to become a Youth Intern. This program is designed to allow Players to take part in other aspects of Chickenshed NYC to gain additional knowledge and experience. These areas may include: being part of the production crew to assist in areas such as lighting, sound, set building and wardrobe; direct mentorship with a TA or member of our administrative team, depending on particular area an interns interests may lie; taking part in think-tanks for future programs and assisting with community outreach.
