What's New?

‘Twas the Night Before' is Chickenshed NYC’s very first on-stage musical production.

It’s New Year’s Eve, and a group of children is traveling through time to stop the cold-hearted Snow Queen from freezing time forever!  Will they make it before the stroke of midnight?  Whether it is 2021, 1976, or even 1836, these children learn that making new friends and joining together is the only way to save the day!

With a nod to the holiday tradition of British Panto, drag artists Blair Queen and Phoebe Jeebies will feature alongside the Chickenshed Players. This theatrical extravaganza is sure to delight and entertain both young and old.

The curtain goes up at the 14th Y Theater on December 11. Join us and be a part of Chickenshed NYC history!

Zara (10) and Conner (8) are two of our newest Chickenshed Players. A school flyer describing Chickenshed's creativity and inclusion immediately caught their mom's attention, and their very first workshop was everything they had hoped for. When they learned they would be part of the holiday show, that was just icing on the cake! Zara loves the dancing and can't wait to entertain the audience as Catherine Cratchit, while Conner will surely shine as Tiny Tim.

Besides Chickenshed, Zara and Conner do karate together, having earned an orange and yellow belt, respectively. School is Zara's favorite place in NYC - particularly the reading and writing workshop.  Conner loves Legos and watching YouTube videos while hanging out at home. They are an outgoing family that loves the arts and believe it is essential for ALL children.

Valerie, their mom, reflected how they felt welcome and not judged from the very first day and think they have found their "one" in Chickenshed NYC. We are happy they have too. Welcome to the family!

Wesley (16) was drawn to Chickenshed immediately while he watched his younger brother perform in the original showcase back in the spring of 2018. He too wanted to take the stage - so they both became founding players when workshops began the following year.
When Covid struck,

Wesley remained stalwart in his desire to be part of it all, even by zoom but is now loving being back in the room with everyone. He is looking forward to performing the role of Storm in the "awesome" black box theater at the Y.

Wesley's favorite place in New York is Hudson Yards, where he can people-watch. He has an incredibly engaging personality, striking up conversation easily with fellow players, classmates, and even workers on the street. He is keen to discover what people do every day!  At school, Wesley's favorite activity is recess because he can "run around like crazy." Can't wait to see his energy on stage!

Evelyn (12) is also a founding player.  She immediately felt at home at Chickenshed because everyone was so lovely and kind. Her favorite place in NYC is the theatre, whether in the audience or on stage at her middle school. As a true lover of theatre, she appreciates that Chickenshed gives everyone a chance to participate.

In the Chickenshed tradition of developing the whole child, Evelyn is volunteering as a mentor for CP1 (ages 5-7), where she has the unique role of being a peer leader. Her mom appreciates that Chickenshed "challenges Evelyn to be her best person."

Evelyn will be delighting the audience of 'Twas the Night Before as Charles Dickens.  She thinks the show is both funny and thoughtful so can't wait to invite family and friends. When not on stage, Evelyn likes to read, write and most recently has taken up fencing. Maybe the part of Captain Hook or Peter Pan is in her future!
