Don’t Stop Believin’

Chickenshed NYC's most recent show was a huge hit!  Inspired by our artistic ally, Keilly Swift’s book, How to Make a Better World, the Players and interns worked tirelessly to devise an original jukebox musical about climate change. On a set created entirely from recycled materials, the entire cast communicated with creativity their concern and hope for the planet's future. From fashion and music made with trash to dances inspired by creatures of the sea and the sky, the performances were thoughtful and entertaining. The songs "We Didn't Start the Fire", "The Times They are a Changin" and of course, Chickenshed NYC's own version of "Don't Stop Believin" were recycled to compliment the evening's theme. Acts on stage were delightfully interspersed with guests from around the world on the Chickenshed TV screen who shared what they are doing to help combat climate change. Congratulations to everyone, particularly the interns, for their talent, passion, and time, to create and perform this tour de force for Chickenshed NYC. Grab some popcorn, put your feet up and enjoy the show!

Meet Our Players

Karolina

Huge congratulations to our senior intern Karolina. She will be attending Northeastern University in the Fall with an open mind about what to major in. Karolina came to Chickenshed NYC through the Bridge program at Trevor Day School, a program that requires seniors to choose a project with tangible learning outcomes during their final months at school. Karolina's expertise is in video production so for 15 hours a week she lent her skills to the management team; photographing workshops, editing footage, and producing a timeless "inside look" video. Working at Chickenshed NYC was an enlightening experience for Karolina. She loved working with a diversity of people and seeing the creativity of children.  Mostly, she enjoyed the challenge of learning new techniques to create videos inspired by the artistic vision of Cyndi. In summary, Karolina appreciated applying her skills for the greater good and found Chickenshed NYC to be a friendly and welcoming community.  Thank you, Karolina, we treasure your time with us. Good Luck!

Bonnie

Congratulations to Bonnie on graduating this year. Bonnie has been with Chickenshed NYC for four years. Bonnie wrote and performed these words to convey what Chickenshed means to her:

Time flies in the blink of an eye but it’s the memories that make it last the longest.

Can you believe it? I'm graduating this year.

High school was different from what I had expected.

I was scared, confused, and lost.

Until I found Chickenshed.

Which I now call my second home.

Being a part of this community for three years was the best decision I ever made.

I met one of the most caring, loving and accepting communities.

I made a family that will always be there to support me instead of putting me down.

I learned to be confident and that being different is a good thing, not something to be ashamed of.

People always ask me “what makes you want to continue doing Chickenshed?”

And I always say, “you have to be there to understand.”

My second year in Chickenshed I was invited to become a youth intern.

I got to have a new point of view from being a student to helping with class lessons and being a practitioner helping hand.

I made strong bonds with the youth interns and practitioners, knowing I can count on them and they can count on me.

They taught me that mistakes are normal.

Being able to express your feelings and taking a step to do what might scare you is growth not shame.

Stepping into this new chapter in my life I hope I can make people smile as much as Chickenshed does.

I will never be able to thank Chickenshed enough for showing me what true love is.

Donor Highlight

Richie Sapp and Razina Aziz-Bose were married recently. In lieu of gifts, they asked their guests to donate to charities of their choice, one of which was Chickenshed NYC.  Richie wrote the following:

Chickenshed is an inclusive theatre company created for children with and without disabilities to immerse themselves in a supportive community that values creativity, kindness, and self-expression. My twin brother, Mikey, and I were part of Chickenshed for seven years when we were living in London.  We didn’t have many joint activities, so we loved the opportunity to be on stage together. Chickenshed NYC was established just five years ago. Part of their mission is to make their programs available to everyone, no matter their financial circumstances. Your donations will go towards discounted tuition and scholarships for children who want to enroll in Chickenshed's amazing theatre programming!

Richie and Razina are third year residents at Mass Gen Brigham and couldn't be prouder to spread the love of Chickenshed to their friends and families.  We are so grateful for their $3,205 gift.

When you have a big event in your life - please consider thinking of Chickenshed NYC too!

Build The Shed Update

Chickenshed NYC’s overall budget for 2023 is $460,000; of which only 15% is covered from program fees and tickets sales. Approximately 35% is funded through grants including $120,000 from the Simons Foundation. An additional 10% comes from generous sponsorships of our bi-annual original production shows.

The largest portion of our funding, this year $175,000, comes from generous donors like you who believe that our transformative inclusive theatre programming contributes to the development and growth of young people in a meaningful and impactful way.

To date we have raised $110,000.

With $65,000 left to go, every gift helps. Your support today will help us reach our goal.
